Supported browsers


You can access Gmail via a browser installed on a PC, Mac, or Linux computer. After you finish Gmail Sign In, to access Gmail via a browser installed on a mobile device, make sure your mobile browser meets these minimum requirements.

To get the latest Gmail features, use a supported browser
In general, Gmail supports the current and prior major release of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis. If you use a browser other than those listed below, you'll be automatically directed to the basic HTML view of Gmail.

There are two exceptions:
Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari do not support desktop notifications.
Offline Gmail only works for Google Chrome. See Installing Gmail offline for Google Chrome.
 
If you're using a supported browser, but see a message in Gmail that your browser is unsupported, you may be using an extension that interferes with browser detection. Try disabling your browser extensions to resolve the problem.
 
To use Gmail, enable cookies and JavaScript
Regardless of your browser type, you must have cookies enabled to use Gmail. Also, if your browser supports it, enable JavaScript.
 

Using Gmail with Google Apps


After you finish Gmail Sign In, using Gmail with Google Apps is a lot like using it with your personal Gmail account, but with added enhancements for working in a company or other organization.

•Business email address. Google Apps lets you have an email address at your own domain—with the format 'name@your_domain.com'—rather than 'name@gmail.com.'
•More than just email. Google Apps is more than just Gmail for your organization. It includes a suite of web-based productivity and collaboration tools that include online documents, calendars, video chat, and much more.
•Different editions. There are different versions of Google Apps, such as for businesses, schools, or government organizations, each of which might have different features and capabilities.
•Administrative controls. With Google Apps, you can have an administrator manage and control people's email accounts across your domain, from a central Admin panel.

Gmail Archiving vs. Deleting

Archiving vs. Deleting

If you're positive you won't need a message again, use the Delete button to send it to Trash.*

Deleting unimportant mail is a great way to free up some of your storage, but with Gmail's free storage, you can probably keep those messages, too! If it's possible that you'll need a message or conversation in the future, Gmail recommends archiving.

Archiving mail moves messages out of your inbox and into your "All Mail" label for safekeeping-- you won't be bothered with extra messages cluttering your inbox, but you'll still be able to find a message if you need it six years from now!

*Deleted messages and conversations are permanently removed from Gmail 30 days after you send them to Trash.

Deleting messages

You can either delete an entire conversation thread or one specific message from a conversation.
To delete an entire conversation thread:
1.Open the message (or select the checkbox next to it).
2.Click the Delete button.

To delete a single message from a conversation thread:
1.Open the conversation and find the message.
2.Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top right of the message pane.

3.Click Delete this message.

Doing this will move the conversation thread or message to your Trash, which can be found on the left side of your Gmail page. (If you don't see Trash along the left side of your Gmail page, click the More drop-down menu at the bottom of your label list.)

Items in your Trash will remain there for approximately 30 days before it is automatically emptied and permanently deleted*.
If you’d like to permanently delete something yourself:
1.Click your Trash label.
2.Check the box next to the message you'd like to permanently delete.
3.Click the Delete forever button.

How do I get something out of Trash?

You can retrieve something from Trash by clicking Trash, selecting the message in question, and clicking Inbox in the 'Move to' drop-down menu. Items that are permanently deleted can’t be retrieved.

*Please be aware, residual copies of deleted messages and accounts may take up to 60 days to be deleted from our active servers and may remain in our backup systems for an additional period of time.

Gmail: Archive mail

Archiving lets you tidy up your inbox by moving messages from your inbox into your All Mail label, so you don't have to delete anything. It's like moving something into a filing cabinet for safekeeping, rather than putting it in the trash can.

Any message you've archived can be found by clicking the "All Mail" label on the left side of your Gmail page. You can also find a message you've archived by clicking on any other labels you've applied to it, or by searching for it.

When someone responds to a message you've archived, the conversation containing that message will reappear in your inbox.

To archive messages:
1.In your inbox, select the message by checking the box next to the sender's name.
2.Click the Archive button in the toolbar above your message list.
 (If you have a message open, you can also archive it by clicking the Archive button above the message.

To move an archived message back to your inbox, follow these steps:
1.Click All Mail. (If you don't see All Mail along the left side of your Gmail page, click the More drop-down menu at the bottom of your labels list.)
2.Check the box next to the sender's name.
3.Click the Move to Inbox button.

If you'd like an option to automatically archive messages after you've sent replies:
1.Click the gear icon and choose Settings.
2.Locate the Send and Archive setting and choose the option you prefer.
3.Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
Once you enable the setting, you'll see a new button at the bottom of the page when you reply to messages. When you're done writing, click Send & Archive to send the reply and archive the previous message in one step, or click Send to send your reply but leave the original message in your inbox.

Navigating Gmail: Conversations

Gmail groups all replies with their original message, creating a single conversation or thread. In other email systems, responses appear as separate messages in your inbox, forcing you to wade through all your mail to follow the conversation. In Gmail, replies to emails (and replies to those replies) are displayed in one place, in order, making it easier to understand the context of a message -- or to follow the conversation.

When you open one message in a conversation, all of your related messages will be stacked neatly on top of each other. Gmail calls this Conversation View. In Conversation View, each new message is stacked on top of the ones that arrived before it, so that the newest message is always the one you see first.

To see all the messages in a conversation, just click the "Expand all" button.

A conversation will break off into a new thread if the subject line of the conversation is changed, or if the conversation reaches over 100 messages.

If you'd like, you can change this setting so that replies aren't threaded into conversations, but appear as individual messages in your inbox. To do so, go to the General tab of your Gmail Settings, and select the radio button next to 'Conversation view off'.

Adding recovery options to your account

Losing access to your emails, your documents and photos can be frustrating. To make sure you can get back in to your account quickly, easily and securely, add recovery options. A few minutes now could save you hours of frustration and waiting later. Below are instructions for adding password recovery options to your account, in case you ever get locked out.

Recovery email address

You don't have to provide a recovery email address, but Google strongly encourages you to. Once you've started using Google as a signed-in user, google will use your recovery email address to communicate with you under the following circumstances:
• Google needs to confirm your username after you create an address
•You can't sign in to Google
•You've forgotten your password
•You're about to run out of storage space
•Google need to alert you to any unusual activity involving your address

If you use Gmail, you may have added a recovery email address to your account when you first signed up. If you don't use Gmail, your password recovery address is the email address you used to sign up for your account (for example: myusername@yahoo.com)

To change or add a recovery address:
1.Visit the Google Accounts security tab.
2.If you're not already signed in to your Google Account, enter your username and password, and click Sign in.
3.Click Account recovery options.
4.Click Edit underneath the Email section.
Your recovery address should be an email address that you use regularly.

Recovery phone number

Having a mobile phone number on your account is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to help keep your account safe and ensure that you can get back into your account if your account is hijacked or you forget your password. Your mobile phone is a more secure identification method than your recovery email address or a security question because, unlike the other two, you have physical possession of your mobile phone.

Hackers target accounts without phones because they're easier targets. Add a phone and join hundreds of millions of other Google users who have helped stop hackers in their tracks.

To add a recovery phone number to your account:
1.Sign in to your Google Account security tab.
2.Click Account recovery options.
3.Click Edit in the Mobile phone section.
4.Select your country from the drop-down menu and enter your phone number. Don't worry about the format of the number. Dashes, spaces, and parentheses are optional but will also be accepted.
5.Click Save at the bottom.

Ways Google will use your mobile phone number
Google will only use your mobile phone number to ensure the security of your account. Here are some ways Google will use it:
•To challenge people when they try to hijack your account
•To send you a verification code so you can get into your account if you ever lose access
•To provide an alternate way for you to verify that you own an account
•To help prevent people from getting into your account by guessing the answer to your security question
•Optional: To alert you to possible threats to your account's security (for example, when your password is changed)

Ways Google won't use your mobile phone number
Unless you make a specific request, Google won’t use your mobile phone number for anything other than protecting your account. For example, unless you tell us to, Google will never:
•Sell your phone number to other companies or organizations
•Call you for marketing purposes
•Publish your phone number online
What type of phone you should use

You should use a mobile phone number so that you always have access to it. It's important that you can receive security alerts as soon as possible so that you can help keep your account safe.

If you've lost access to your account, you can try to regain access through our account recovery form.
Google no longer supports security questions as an account recovery option.

How to change your Gmail password

Here're several steps:

1.Click the 'gear' logo in the top right.
2.Select Settings.
If you're on a mobile device, switch to desktop view for the full list of settings.
3.Open the Accounts tab.
4.In the 'Change account settings' section, click Change password.
5.In the new window, enter your current password and your new password.
Make sure you create a unique password to help keep someone from breaking in to your account.
Here are a few tips for creating your password, and keeping it safe:

•Your password should be easy for you to remember without being obvious for someone else to guess.
•Don't choose a dictionary word as your password.
•Include a variety of characters, such as punctuation marks, numbers, and mix capital and lowercase letters.
•Never tell anyone your password.
•Never write down your password. Even if you don't think that somebody would know that it was your Gmail password if they saw it, think of a way to remember it so that you don't have to write it down.
•Periodically change your password.

If your password isn't working, you'll need to go through our password recovery process. Google Apps users, please contact your organization's IT admin for help with password recovery.

Get started with IMAP and POP3

What is POP and IMAP?

POP and IMAP is what allows you to download messages from Gmail's servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird, even when you aren't connected to the Internet.

How much does POP and IMAP cost?

POP and IMAP access are free for all Gmail users.

What's the difference between POP and IMAP?

If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).

IMAP also provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.

Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.
